Hollow Knight: Silksong Has Officially Been Beaten By a New Game
Hades 2 reviews put it ahead of Hollow Knight: Silksong, making it the highest-rated new game of 2025 to date. Hades 2 has been in early access since last year, but it’s finally entering its full, 1.0 release. The Supergiant Games roguelike builds on its predecessor, delivering a familiar experience but with various quality of life improvements, new features, and more.
Hollow Knight: Silksong and Hades 2 are both sequels to beloved indie games that appear to have largely lived up to the hype. Silksong was finally released earlier this month after an agonizing six-year wait, earning acclaim from fans and critics alike. Hollow Knight: Silksong reviews were so positive that it was initially the highest-rated game of all time, before settling at a lower, but still incredibly impressive, 92 overall rating. Silksong‘s 92 rating made it tied with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 as the year’s highest-rated new release, but now Hades 2 has dethroned them both — at least, for now.
Hades 2 Reviews
Hades 2 reviews are in and, according to review aggregate site OpenCritic, it has a 93 overall rating. Its Metacritic score is even higher at 94. Hades 2 reviews praise the roguelike for its art, combat, and music, with the game earning multiple perfect 10/10 scores. The takeaway seems to be that Hades 2 is essentially a bigger and better version of the first game. Now, there is still time for the Hades 2 review score to fluctuate. It’s possible that the game will climb above 93, but it’s also possible that it will dip lower than Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Silksong, but for now, it’s the highest-rated new game release of the year.
Hades 2 earning such high scores was expected, and it makes the Game of the Year field that much more competitive. 2025 has been a year dominated by indie games, and it will be interesting to see if one of them manages to take away the top prize when The Game Awards returns in December.
Something that may be working against Hades 2 is the fact that the game is not currently available on PlayStation or Xbox, which limits its audience. Hades 2 is available on PC and is a timed-console exclusive on Nintendo Switch consoles. At the time of this writing, it’s unclear when the game will be coming to PS5 or Xbox. It took nearly a year for the original Hades to debut on PlayStation and Xbox, so fans on those platforms should brace themselves for a potentially long wait.
